The moment I saw that bright underwater slope, I wanted to dive straight down. It looked so alive that I just couldn’t resist painting it. Working there was fun but also tricky. The seafloor tilted about forty-five degrees, so I couldn’t sit the way I usually do. I kept slipping down the sand and had to lie sideways or push myself back up with my fins.
But what a view it was. In the distance stood a big green coral head, like a giant cabbage, and sergeant fish were swimming busily above it. Right in the center waved a beautiful anemone flower with two funny clownfish of different colors hiding inside. Closer to me were bright corals glowing with red fish moving around them. And, of course, the curious black and white bannerfish appeared immediately to check what I was doing.
Each of these little scenes could have become a separate painting, but together they create a feeling of depth and movement. When you look at them, it feels like the ocean pulls you in and takes you with it.
P.S. Underwater artist Olga Belka thanks Alexey Chernyaev’s dive club in Dahab for their wonderful help and support during the creation of this painting.
